The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday, Jan. 15, edition that Cognicase
advanced 26 per cent Friday on speculation that it is merging with LGS Group.
The Globe says both companies deny they are in talks. Cognicase says it cannot
explain Friday's runup in the stock. Analysts attributed the increase to rumours in
the market that Cognicase might be taken over, or could be planning a financing to
make more acquisitions. Cognicase says it is not for sale. LGS says rumours of a
merger between it and Cognicase are unfounded. LGS, however, would not rule
out a future transaction between the two companies. Unnamed analysts say CGI
Group is a logical suitor. All three companies provide technology services to
businesses, says The Globe. CGI says it does not comment on rumours. First
Albany analyst Damon Rinaldi says the surge in Cognicase's share price may not
be related to takeover speculation. He says Cognicase has successfully made the
transition from a Y2K company to an IT company and that the share price
increase was long overdue.
