***Armed Police***< anyone want to comment on the issued of British police not wearing guns like American police? Or do they now? I don't know...maybe females make better police > We recently had an American family visit [from SI incidentally] and I took them for a drive around Auckland. We were stopped at a police checkpoint [checking car warrant of fitness, seat belts, driver's licence] and the visitors were surprised to see the police were not wearing guns or even clubs. It does give the place a more pleasant feeling. They do carry guns in a locked box in the trunk and some special police carry guns ready to go. There is also the Armed Offenders Squad, who do an amazing job of catching angry and distraught gun-wielding people, usually without shooting them, though that has happened at times. There are no 'turkey shoots' as happen in the USA where somebody reaches into their jacket for their driver's licence and the police 'fill 'em full of lead' in about 2 seconds and then add another dozen rounds to make sure. Any shooting is VERY well organized. There are NO innocent victims [so far!] other than the victims of the criminal. People are not allowed to carry guns here, or even own them, without licences and stuff. There is not a 'gun culture' here, though there is a 'gun culture' related to hunting and sport shooting. A few people are 'gun nuts' who are dangerous and shouldn't have guns, but they are relatively few. They don't get community acceptance like the USA NRA crazies who think that if 6 year olds were armed at school, they could offer defence when 8 year olds let rip with an AK47 or the current weapon of choice. Mqurice PS: Have to go - will answer any personal abuse later...golf calls. Going to break 80!!! First time ever. That will start off an incredible market rally and see stocks soar unbounded to Dow 16,000 by Feb 2002 [as per moving cups, handles and candlesticks].
