for the trading portfolio,,,,if we think a defensive team is needed, we either cash out or buy puts or sell covered calls.

for the long term portfolio,,,i'd imagine we buy puts or sit tight since it's supposed to be ignored for the long term...and perhaps, we'll have extra cash to add to this fund while the stocks are correcting or crashing...
