Should YHOO build a BB site from the ground up to answer the BB content challenge that is sure to come ?

I don't think Ah believes in the concept of "Broadband content". If so, he is wrong.

However there is so far no evidence that Excite can do any better a job. It will be up to the kind of people who run the entertainment industry to make it happen. Neither YHOO or ATHM need *buy* this content- only create a framework under which they can operate. Hopefully (and its pure hope at the moment) Excite is already heading in this direction.

If they try to do both, how do they effectively parse their customers between the two

Not sure if this is to your point- but apparently it is possible to detect the speed that a user is capable of handling. Excite plans to do it and adapt its web site accordingly.

Great! Give me the YHOO link that will direct me to the high speed content that my Road Runner service is capable of handling.

You don't seem to understand how the network works. I can reach anything with my 33.6, for example.

How <Does Excide and Yahoo overlap> ? One is narrow band and one is becoming increasingly more BB every day... and will become more so in February.

Last time I checked 95% of users are dial-up, so I do think Excide will prevent dail-up from accessing their page.

Should YHOO build a BB site from the ground up to answer the BB content challenge that is sure to come ?

It isn't difficult to build 33.6, DSL, cable sites all under one presentation. This is only a matter of interfaces and derived objects with switches. This aspect isn't an issue. It isn't anything. I wish it was.

What will they do with what they get ?

They don't have to get anything ATHM offers because they already have it.

Without a broadband alliance, on which side of the fence do they sit... narrow band or BB?

The difference you seek isn't there. A subset has no element not included under a set.

If they try to do both, how do they effectively parse their customers between the two,

It actually is quite simple. I did it for my sites when I was composing them 2 years ago. I would have one folder that contained files for 33.6 and the files were almost all text. Then I'd have another folder which contained files and objects. On the front I'd have a user switch. This was a primitive way of doing it back then. I never worried about it since there were few high speed access hits.

in the simple manner that lead the 4th rate AOL to the top of the Prodigy/Compuserve/AOL heap ? Which leads us back to the question... if they try to build BB from the ground up,

Excide has nothing but habit working for it. In '95 I used the Excite search engine often and I still use it to check out the NFL, but any other similar "portal" can do the same. I just have a habit using the Excite page. To get there I type "Excite" in Navigator's Location URL box. I don't even waste a bookmark on it. The BB difference is found in the physical layer of the network. Unless AOL takes RR to closed access, RR users will be able to access Yahoo.

doesn't that give Excite an incredible lead ?

Excite is a software firm which ATHM presumably bought for their software creativity to build tools that would make a new @Home page powerful and unique. KB and I have given a framework about how this could be done. ATHM is going down another path completely. The value and abilities of Excide are being squandered because the direction is undefined and is patchwork. There is no overriding model being engineered. This lack of direction is creating internal tension in the company. If Jermo had a way out we would have heard it by now.

I watched Jermo's ON24 interview. He's a little boy and he is trying to put on a happy face. If I had done that interview, you'd see what a forceful executive is all about. You can't be weak and fearful and hope to make a good impression.
