And how is this different from selling high speed Internet access?

Because it is not a commodity, nor is the price in a freefall.

Broadband networks require massive amounts of *real* things to implement, and constant supervision to maintain and improve. In addition customers once signed up are not easily shifted and provide a continuous revenue stream.

There are very few conduits into the home and cable is by far the best available to most.

All that aside: As @home itself admits internet access rates (including broadband) are trending eventually to zero. Providing a service that will keep customers is critical as there *will* be plenty of competition.

For the long term it always has boiled down to this. What can @home do that will keep customers? Thats why they bought Excite (whether you like the choice or not)- as a platform on which to build some customer loyalty.
