About.com is not all great but it has a big lead. It's a network of topic-specific areas led by "Guides". It has proven popular, sticky, etc. and IMO has a long way to run yet in terms of extension of the concept. Plus, they've already got a lot of e-mail newsletters running which enhances the community feel & stickiness. I don't like their discussion boards, however - they just farmed them out to Delphi.com which requires a cumbersome registration process and makes them look cheap.

I just saw the story about Yahoo getting into the group buy / demand aggregation business (like Mercata or Accompany.com). Since Paul Allen is backing one of these guys that could be an important field for Go2Net if they get going soon. Maybe Go2Net could take a stake in Mercata or whatever and then start promoting it across their network and in direct correspondence with members.

Go2Net has got to start looking into more direct permission marketing (e-mail newsletters, etc.) I know it gets some people's back up, but it's a proven tool.

One thing is for sure, e-commerce is changing everything. Hopefully for us consumers, it's PRICES that it will change the most! Will probably cause a worldwide depression at some point though <g>.
