NYC Comptroller Hevesi Wants Talisman Out of Sudan, Paper Says
By Kim Jordan

New York, Jan. 17 (Bloomberg) -- New York City Comptroller Alan Hevesi plans to use the city's position as a shareholder in Talisman Energy Inc. to force the oil company to pull out of the Sudan after the Clinton administration said the company is responsible for slavery in that country, the New York Post reported.

In New Jersey, local Congress members and church leaders held a special service in Newark to pressure Governor Christine Todd Whitman to divest New Jersey's $17 million in Talisman shares. The Clinton administration and U.N. officials say the Sudanese government raids villages around Talisman's oil fields to clear the areas, the paper said.

Last month, Talisman adopted business-ethics guidelines amid controversy over the company's Sudanese oil project.
