<Let me ask you a question. How many CD's are downloaded over the net today? Is there any kind of protection out there for this at all? this is a way simpler technology and only the MP3 stuff is doing anything at all, and even that is limited to not the mainstream.
So, notwithstanding techology (I know they and everyone has it), the movie guys won;t allow it.

A CD isn't encrypted in any way, so people can just move the data around anywhere.

An encrypted movie could only be decoded by the big projector box [which is a couple of metres long, a metre or two high and a metre or so wide. I suppose that's the idea and as you say, unless they have got a really secure way of handling the transmission, they'd be better off to stick with film [which is at least physically difficult to move around the place]. The saving in distribution cost was significant and time to market significant too, but as I recall, the biggest saving was in security of intellectual property rights.

The chicken and egg syndrome will, I suppose, be the main hindrance to development. Until there are a lot of theatres around with the decoding and projection boxes, which are expensive items, I can't see that many film makers would bother digitizing their movies [though that doesn't seem to be an expensive thing to do - just run it through a projector I suppose and catch the image].

PS: At least I didn't kill anyone with wild golf balls - scaring gophers and busting a few tree branches is okay [I hope or did I get banned after I left?]
