I made over that last year because I cashed in a bunch of options. The average person who works for me makes 85K, so they and my company pay out the maximum in SS taxes - its about 9K. Then, every 4 years if they are lucky you've got stock options to sell for say, 200K - 400K. I don't know why you keep focusing on all these details, I just use 10K as a round number - its close enough, since everyone pays the maximum fica around here and stock options have that uncapped medicare payout. Would it make you feel better if I used 9K vs. 10K - ok, I'll do that. It doesn't change anything from my pov though. How do you feel about your kids having to pay these taxes because their "income" is lower than the income of somebody living in an 600K home? Do you actually believe that a worker making 70K/year with a 1.5K rent payment should be compensating somebody who owns a 600K home outright? Do you know what that worker would do for the opportunity to live in that home - almost anything I would say. Geez I just can't believe we are having this discussion Bill, I really can't.
