I can speculate that 19th century Catholic immigrants had a higher child-to-adult ratio than Protestants, but I don't know that for a fact. I think that large families used to be considered desirable by Protestants, as well as Catholics, and I know for a fact that contraceptives did not become widely used, nor effective, until the 20th century.
