Entrust Technologies to Lease Software to Compete With VeriSign

San Jose, California, Jan. 17 (Bloomberg) -- Entrust
Technologies Inc., a maker of security software, said it would
start leasing its products to compete more closely with rival
VeriSign Inc.

VeriSign and Entrust both make software used to issue and
manage computerized IDs, known as digital certificates. Entrust
previously only sold its products to companies that used their
internal technical staff to manage the software, while VeriSign
leased its software and managed it for customers.

Entrust said it will continue to sell its software and also
will give customers the option of leasing the products. The
Plano, Texas-based company is leasing space in a security
computer data center from First Data Corp. to store information
for customers who decide to lease the software. Entrust will
start leasing its software by the end of March, Chief Executive
John Ryan said.
``We've become totally agnostic as to whether the customer
wants to outsource the whole thing or run it internally,' Ryan
said at the RSA Security Conference in San Jose, California.

Ryan said Entrust also will manage software for customers
who want to purchase it.

Entrust shares have climbed 77 percent since Dec. 1, while
VeriSign has doubled in the same period
