The census figures don't support your argument that the elderly are the most affluent Americans. Here are the median numbers for assets and income. (The assets are from 93 and income from 98 census.)

up to 34 years, assets $6K - income $36K
35 to 44 years, assets $29K - income $48K
45 to 54 years, assets $58K - income $54K
55 to 64 years, assets $91K - income $43K
65 years + older, assets $86K - income $22K

census.gov
