Two friends of mine use voice activation software. One does because he suffers from severe arthritis which makes typing for him exceptionally painful at times--and he's only 35. The other is an Ecuadoran immigrant. She never learned to type but, nonetheless, is able to spend her days in front of a computer terminal using a word processor (she's a translator and editor) by virtue of the power of this software. Both tell me it's very easy to use once the software learns how to recognize your voice. They also estimate the software accurately transcribes their voice messages 95% of the time. A 5% error rate seems high to me in general, but my friends tell me that it is easy to live with and doesn't prevent them from completing their work expeditiously.

I do know just from reading computer-centric media articles that voice activation software has come along way over the years. I have a sister who suffers from cerebral palsey which has ruined the motor coordination on her right side, making it impossible for her to type with both hands, who will soon have her own computer and be able to use it for word processing applications with voice activation software. As far as I understand, all anyone needs to utilizer it in addition to a computer is a microphone, which can now be purchased as part of a headset, so that it is directly in front of your lips.

I Wish You the Best,
Puck
