So what would you suggest....sit there with no phone for 3 years so I can save $1900 and wait for the phone? I think your confused.

HDR in cars will be at least 3 years before the car makers can get it into the cars. I would venture to say that the electronics they are finishing up today will be in the 2003 cars at the earliest. Since there is NO HDR now, then I would expect it to be like 2005 before you see HDR in cars. Car based Packet I would expect to see in 2001 model years however. The phone I have now does packet and has the internet on it.
