The currency unit is Euro not DM. 40 Euro is about $40.5.

Man, where did you learn your math ? Shame on you and your teacher. Amazing that a tech guy like you does not seem to be able to perfom basic math calculations like multiplying two numbers: Last quote in Frankfurt was Euro 39.70 * the Exchange rate of 1.0083 Euro/US$ =~ US$ 40 .
