Motorola and VeriSign Unveil Plans to Deliver Secure E-Commerce To Wireless Market

January 18, 2000 08:31 AM
SAN JOSE, Calif., Jan. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- At the RSA Conference 2000, Motorola MOT and VeriSign, Inc., VRSN today announced they have signed a Memorandum of Understanding that outlines a strategic relationship with the intent to jointly develop and market solutions to enable secure and trusted e-commerce transactions to users of Internet-enabled wireless devices.
As an example, consumers will be able to purchase items using their Internet-enabled wireless phone with the confidence that the merchant is who they say they are and their purchase information is private and secure. Merchants will likewise be confident that consumers' identities are valid.

VeriSign is the world's leading provider of Internet security services (also known as trust services), which include authentication, validation, and payment. Security has increased confidence in Internet commerce. By bringing the same trusted transaction capabilities which exist in the wired world to wireless users, confidence in e-commerce over Internet-enabled wireless devices is expected to grow.

"The continued growth in wireless voice and data communications has opened up a broad new frontier for mobile e-commerce applications and services," said Janiece Webb, Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Personal Networking Group for Motorola. "By using VeriSign's global trust infrastructure we expect to deliver unparalleled solutions to new and existing customers and consumers. We plan to enable people to perform critical secure transactions where and when they want to do them. We will bring the Internet to wireless and power to the person with complete `end-to-end' solutions through the carrier or service provider."

"By building the foundations for secure, standards-based, wireless e-commerce, we will enable a broad range of new services for consumers, carriers, and service providers," said Richard Yanowitch, Executive Vice President of Marketing for VeriSign. "By combining Motorola's leadership in the wireless communication market with VeriSign's proven experience in developing trust services for the Internet, we are accelerating the time when wireless e-commerce is a common, everyday occurrence."

To enable secure and trusted wireless transactions, Motorola and VeriSign intend to jointly fund development of a broad range of solutions for wireless device manufacturers, carriers, consumers, and e-commerce service providers (such as financial institutions, media companies, ASPs -- Application Service Providers, and Business-to-Business and Business-to-Customer exchanges).

Motorola and VeriSign intend to develop solutions that:

1) Ensure that the subscribers are really who they claim to be -- AUTHENTICATION 2) Verify that subscribers are authorized to conduct particular transactions -- VALIDATION 3) Protect sensitive information from compromise as it passes between devices, carriers, gateways, and service providers -- ENCRYPTION 4) Ensure that transactions can not later be contested -- NON-REPUDIATION 5) Facilitate settlement of transactions between buyers and sellers -- PAYMENT

The solutions may include:

-- Server-side solutions -- supporting Wireless Application Protocol (WAP)traffic secured using the Wireless Transport Layer Security (WTLS) standard. -- End-to-End Client Authentication Solutions -- enabling mobile users to reliably identify themselves and to sign in a way that can be verified throughout the entire communications channel. -- Directory and Validation services -- enabling appropriate parties throughout the communication channel to find appropriate users and validate transactions and individuals.

The combined technologies of Motorola and VeriSign will be used to enable a broad range of secure wireless solutions. For example, today a Motorola WAP Server incorporating a Class 2 implementation of WTLS that utilizes VeriSign-signed certificates allows Internet-enabled wireless devices to make secure e-commerce transactions.
