Looks that we're going to have a great day: -6.28 % at the opening, what a good surprise for a day during which we're supposed to get good news...:-)

John, remember that Intel's 800-series of chipsets come with a north bridge and a south bridge, among other things. Up to now, all of Intel's 8xx chipsets (810, 820, 840) share the exact same south bridge, called ICH. This ICH supports USB 1.0, AC97, 32-bit 33 MHz PCI, UATA-66, lettuce, pickles, on a sesame-seed bun. Of course, the north bridge changes from one chipset to another. It's that north bridge that determines the memory interface.

Seems like Solano-1 would have used a PC133 north bridge, but would have kept the same ICH. But now Intel is on the verge of releasing a new south bridge component, called ICH2. This component will include USB 2.0 and UATA-100 and is intended to replace ICH across the board. Therefore, rather than have customers build systems around Solano-1 which will become obsolete a month after its release, Intel is just going to release both the Solano north bridge and the ICH2 south bridge together and call it Solano-2.

By the way, I've seen a roadmap that not only mentions Solano-2, but also "Camino-2." I think Camino-2 will follow along the same lines as Solano-2. That is, Camino-2 will just keep the same 820 north bridge as the original Camino, then replace the south bridge with the new ICH2.
