[B] NY Precious Metals Review: Feb gold up $4.7, nears 3-wk high

New York--Jan 18--COMEX Feb gold futures settled up $4.70 at $289.60
per ounce after jumping late in the session to $289.80, its highest level
in nearly 3 weeks. Brokers said that initial buying interest was seen from
a couple of large NY based trade houses. Platinum and palladium followed
gold higher, while palladium parted company and slipped slightly.

OT. WASHINGTON, Jan. 18 — " The boom on Wall Street is widening the income gap between the poorest and richest U.S. families, according to a report by two Washington research groups. The earnings for the poorest fifth of American families rose less than 1 percent between 1988 and 1998 but jumped 15 percent for the richest fifth, the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities and the Economic Policy Institute said in their report issued Tuesday."
