Tiered dialup service?

Maybe I was a little less than clear. If I have a site that that has attractions (don't want to use the dreaded content word) and these attractions can be viewed by both those with a narrow band connection and a high speed broadband connection obviously you are going to have two levels of experience (tiered if you will). If I was running this site I'd want to make sure that I provided two different levels, one that would exploit the strength of broadband and one that would overcome limitation of narrowband. This means while on one end of the spectrum we're making things richer, including streaming voice & video, we are also trying to make things smaller and faster....so say we can get info out to that wireless handheld device, that slow modem connection. This puts a big burden on the attraction creator.

I know this issue well because my clients do it to me all the time. I'm making images for them to go to 2700 dpi offset printing and "While you are at it, can you make it so we can use them on our website and I'd like to email one to the client." It seems rather straight forward to build in this duality, but it isn't. A programer or creative worker has to think in two directions at once and this is always a distraction.

If Excite took over the function of optimizing the broadband side for the attraction creators this would simplify matters for them. They have the experience. Go look at the job listings for almost any web property, you'll see a long list of job descriptions starting with the word "broadband".

Meanwhile, I'd better start looking for another line of work since this stuff I make all day for money is going to end up being free. I guess content is just the stuff you throw on your site to show off your programing skills? I have photographic clients like that, the important thing to them is the camera and the type of film....the image they create is incidental. I do wonder what kind of typewriter James Joyce used to write his content.
