Good point about "proprietary open architecture with high switching costs" and thus the ability to change the barriers to entry at the companies whim... market conditions aside. DS's remark concerning the difficulty the 'getting the information that let's us easily put a company in the right genus' is a tough one.

The unknown factor is if companies like JDSU/VRTS can control the market enough to introduce "proprietary" ingredients to further accentuate the "switching costs". And would we have enough information available to us to identify when/if this occurs.

At this point in time I would agree with DS that JDSU does not have this capability yet. I believe components are fairly standardized. If the NT's and the LU's of the world became even more dependent on JDSU for their components then JDSU would be more in the position to dictate the technical specs(and thus the opportunity to introduce proprietary ingrediants) and not the other way around. If JDSU's market share continues to increase and the inventions start coming out of JDSU's labs then we may be getting closer to that point.
