"If you have a $1,000 server, it's hard to justify a $1,000 RAID controller," said Chris Crotoeau, marketing director for Intel's I/O products division. "We think that by using a building block approach, [original equipment manufacturers] can get [RAID] in for under $300 for a single channel and still benefit end users with reliability and protection." If I remember correctly, I saw a EIDE-based (UDMA/66) RAID controller at Fry's Electronics a couple of weeks ago for $100. I don't remember the manufacturer. This would, of course, only be suitable for home or non-critical use.
