AOL, Gateway to jointly sell DSL service

NEW YORK, Jan 19 (Reuters) - Top Internet services provider
America Online Inc. , which is set to acquire media
giant Time Warner Inc. and personal computer maker
Gateway Inc. , said Wednesday they signed a deal to
start trials of high-speed Internet service products.
The companies said in a statement they will begin offering
high-speed access using digital subscriber line (DSL)
technology to consumers in San Diego, California, and Timonium,
Maryland.
The DSL service will be sold at Gateway stores in those
areas. Sales representatives will determine whether a customer
is eligible for the service based on the location of a person's
home and and telephone line characteristics.
DSL technology, which takes advantage of unused capacity on
existing phone lines, allows customers to use a single line to
send faxes or make phone calls while surfing the Internet.
The DSL service is part of a broader AOL-Gateway alliance,
which includes cross marketing of products, as well as
co-development of Internet products.
AOL shares were up 1-13/16 at 62-9/16 in Wednesday morning
trading on the New York Stock Exchange while shares of Gateway
were off 1/16 at 58-5/8, also on the New York Stock Exchange.
