I think the discussion of the retirement issue is a work in progress, like everything else on this thread, and that the issue has by no means been beaten to death. Your point about inflation is well taken, and shouldn't be ignored in one's decision about how much money one needs to retire. The Quicken program's financial planning tools are very helpful at showing just how much even 4% annual inflation will bite into the real value of one's money. And by plugging in other inflation values (remember the Jimmy Carter days?) one can experience a good case of sticker shock.
