SANTA CLARA, Calif., Jan. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Network Associates, Inc. (Nasdaq: NETA - news) today announced the McAfee VirusScan 4.5 product, the next generation of its flagship virus security software to protect Internet-connected desktops from increasingly common and damaging computer virus outbreaks. The new McAfee VirusScan product combines the market-leading McAfee virus detection and cleaning engine with the industry's only true incremental updating capability for rapid, easy deployment of fixes up to 20 times faster than today's technology allows. The McAfee VirusScan product also provides faster content scanning and enhanced centralized management of desktop anti-virus software to ensure that new viruses and malicious code threats neither enter nor leave their corporate network, protecting businesses from both costly network downtime and liability from a virus outbreak protects companies from disguised threats. According to research firm Computer Economics, virus outbreaks cost e-businesses and end users more than $12.1 billion worldwide in 1999 alone.

The McAfee VirusScan 4.5 product is the latest version of Network Associates' award-winning virus security software, protecting enterprise desktops where large amounts of vital corporate information is kept. Through content scanning, the software protects against Internet-borne viruses and malicious code found in email, Internet downloads and ActiveX, Java and Java Script Applets, and viruses such as the recently discovered BubbleBoy. The McAfee VirusScan 4.5 product is the industry's only anti-virus solution that enables companies to incrementally update all desktop virus protection easily and quickly to prevent against virus outbreaks. The product can deliver true incremental updates to a company's entire enterprise up to 20 times faster than previous distribution methods due to a reduced signature file size of only 100 KB, which provides only the needed updates and results in saved network bandwidth.

The McAfee VirusScan 4.5 software offers full integration with McAfee Total Virus Defense virus management solutions, offering centralized control of desktop virus security in addition to flexible logging and reporting capabilities to help companies proactively plan for and defend against potential virus outbreaks. The McAfee VirusScan 4.5 product is integrated with the McAfee AutoUpdate solution, which automatically keeps desktop anti-virus software updated with the latest versions and most current virus signature files. The McAfee VirusScan 4.5 software also communicates with McAfee AutoImmune technology, enabling the software to automatically detect and remove previously unknown viruses by using heuristics, while deploying a cure throughout the entire enterprise.
