CUPERTINO, Calif. (CBS.MW) -- Technology shares will be buzzing during Wednesday's session as the market prepares for a rising tide of earnings from high tech bellwethers, International Business Machines, Apple Computer and Advanced Micro Devices.

AMD - primed and ready

Intel's better-than-expected fourth-quarter profit news announced last week set a high bar for rival AMD to climb over. See Intel earnings.

According to analysts surveyed by First Call, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD: news, msgs) is expected to post a profit of one cent a share, clawing its way back from a third-quarter loss.

Lehman Brothers analyst Jim Barlage said he expects the company to turn in a six-cent profit with revenue of $845 million.

A year ago, the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based chip maker posted net income of $22.3 million, or 15 cents a share. Revenue was $788.8 million.

Aggressive pricing tactics from Intel have taken a toll on AMD's performance in recent quarters, eating into profits on the company's core line of chips.

The ramp of AMD's Athlon microprocessor has added a leg up to the company's attempts at a rebound. In early January, AMD rolled out its 800MHz Athlon, going head-to-head with Intel's 800MHz Pentium III chip.

Lehman's Barlage said the microprocessor business has been strong during the fourth quarter. The analyst said he expects microprocessor unit sales of 5.1 million. He sees Athlon sales at 800,000 units, up from 200,000 last quarter, with revenue from that segment hitting $185 million.

"The microprocessor business is seasonally strong in the fourth quarter, which will help (AMD's) sequential pattern," he said. "The market has been quite robust in the fourth quarter."

Barlage said growth in flash memory products, or memory chips, will also be an important factor in AMD's revenue growth, both sequentially and year-over-year. The analyst sees flash sales at $250 million for the fourth quarter.

AMD shares gained 2 9/16 to 39 9/16 in recent trading.

Scot,

<Don't like to post rumors...but there's not much info to post....from the AMDZone Boards, future chipset from AMD:

The chipset is AMD 760.
Bus support 266 MHz
memory support DDR 266 MHz
ATA 66 or ATA 100
supports 4x AGP >

This rumor has been around for a while.

<Could this be targeted for servers?>

Servers and high end systems. The memory industry seems to think DDR could even get into laptops very quickly because of the power charecteristics.

re:"760 chipset"

Rumors are around. Appears to be old?

From a talkgroup,

10/17/99
discussions.hardwarecentral.com

"And for you current Athlon users looking for an OC'able mobo, I'd
wait until AMD unviels it's AMD-760 chipset which is supposed to support DDR/AGP4X/and PC-133 memory."

10/20/99
"If they put together this
AMD-760 that supports DDR/AGP4X/PC-133MHz it would be great."
