At least, General Pinochet stepped down in a democratic way. This cannot be said about Stalin, Hitler, and many other left- or right-wing dictators before and after him.
In a way, he did a "General Franco" by allowing a smooth and peaceful transition to freedom of expression.
Allende was a left-wing dictator overthrown by a military general who restored order as he saw fit.
The British violations of international law (diplomatic immunity, etc) in the Pinochet case is inexcusable.
