Re 100,000 writes per card.

Actually, I think the spec I quoted was 100,000 reads/writes per spot on the card. So a big card would take many times that many pictures.

But, I was thinking more generally, and to other possible applications. (I have nothing particular in mind, however). RAM's greatest advantages over flash are speed and number of reads/writes. Flash's advantage is that it is non-volatile and more rugged. Once written to flash, you don't lose the information. This security may be a powerful one, as other disadvantages ease.

Remember, in Innovator's Dilemma, Christensen makes the point that "best" in some attributes is not always necessary. The market in effect sets a "good enough" level for various product attributes. Past "good enough", other product attributes control technology selection. As flash power consumption gets better, it may be able to play an increasing role in portable devices, for instance, where its ruggedness gives it a distinct edge.

Best,
John
