Hi Betty, I agree completely with your thoughts on selling. I rarely sell out of a stock completely, but usually limit the amount at risk to a predetermined level. That means selling small portions off as the price rises to keep the dollars at risk relatively constant.

In declining markets the cash raised by selling profitably is then used to repurchase shares, assuming I still like the long term prospects of the company. This is when I let the risk level expand.

The logic goes something like this:

"If you were only willing to risk $10,000 in this stock when it was priced at $3/share, why would you now be willing to risk considerably more at $25/Share?"

If nothing else, it's kept my exuberance rational! :-) It has also allowed me to stay with stocks far beyond what I would if I were just going to trade out of them.

GENE has paid its way in my porfolio at various times and yet years have gone by when the stock has been left at the side of the road. The performance recently has paid for lots of roadside time!

Best regards, Tom
