Well ish I am a fiscal conservative and social liberal (a very common distinction around here) so I deal with this issue of what is more important to me all the time. At this point in this climate abortion is more important to me than any other issue because I am disturbed by the rising conservative tide and backlash against feminism etc. by conservatives, therefore I will accept fiscal irresponsibility if I have to (but I don't want to).

But with regards to lifting the cap off SS, the truth is there already is no cap on medicare, and almost 100% of most workers salaries are already taxed. So on a personal level, lifting the cap won't affect anybody I know - I don't care that much. The one exception are the stock options payouts but the corporations will yell a loud cry over that - because no cap on SS will mean a corp will have to pay an employer match of 7% on all of John Chambers yearly 20mm income, etc. This wouldn't have been an issue had they not recategorized options as regular income, but since they have done that, lifting a SS cap will mean colossal tax payouts by corps on executive income... bet Gore didn't think of that, and he will have a fight on his hands from biz lobby that he didn't count on I'm sure. So in this case I wouldn't worry about the SS cap issue and I'd go with Gore since I agree with him on abortion/gays etc. Of course we all know he won't win.
