John, I think the discussion about row locking has morphed into something it wasn't. It is not a barrier to entry; its an innovation on standards. (The whole idea of a King morphing into a Gorilla is counter to the GG model.) Oracle, imo, is not a Gorilla in RDBMS. They are the King and can be de-throned by MSFT over time. What is keeping ORCL on the throne is not bte, but their continuous innovation in RDBMS tools for the internet, as well as constant improvement in the performance of their RDBMS and excellent customer relations with their major customers. Last months slashing of their retail prices by ORCL by 50% may be an indication that they are not the Gorilla, but a King fighting the charging Prince.
