Brian <Thank you for the Transmeta posts. >

You are very welcome. I guess I have speaking out aloud as I am digesting the information disclosed.

My feeling is that it is an impressive and innovative technology. Definitely a different way of approaching computer design. Just as radical an approach as Merced. That is the reason for the hype.

However the product does not pose the threat implied by the hype.

Interesting that Merced used the new technology to go all out for maximum performance, and power dissipation be damned. Prudent, because performance sells big, and helps defray the massive development cost.

Transmeta has used its radically new technology for minimizing power dissipation (a la STRONGARM), and yet execute x86 binaries. It lies in the gap between x86 and STRONG ARM. Will it find a profitable niche to survive ? Radically new computer architectures have a track record of being business failures. Ah yes, you recognize the pioneers by noting the arrows in the back.

The technology could have been used to make an outstanding Java machines. Unfortunately Java machines are mostly fluff at this stage. The x86 market is real, and a potential goldmine or an abysmal pit. The lower power dissipation is not compelling on laptops, since the displays and other components dominate the power dissipation. But new devices can take advantage of this technology. New devices take time, to develop and market. And time plays to Intel's advantage. TIMNA can be tweaked in time to narrow the power gap.

Most likely Transmeta will not make it on the business front. But the technology will live on. Other companies will either take a page from the Transmeta playbook, or Transmeta will be acquired.
