try right-clicking on your desktop

select 'properties' from the menu, then the settings tab

on the 'screen area' adjustment, it probably says 800 by 600 pixels

and you can slide it to the right to the next setting, 1024 by 768.

then click 'apply' then 'ok'

i think you'll then have to reboot for the new setting to take effect.
