Net TV for Korean By Bill Clifford, CBS MarketWatch Last Update: 9:27 AM ET Jan 20, 2000 For Koreans who prefer televisions to PCs for accessing the Web, downloading music or trading stocks online, Korea Thrunet and TriGem Computers Inc. have just launched an Internet TV service. Subscribers to Thrunet TV connect to the Net over a cable television network from a set-top PC newly developed by Trigem. The price of the box is 560,000 won ($495). Alternatively, new subscribers can lease the equipment for about $8.80 per month if they sign up for a 2-year contract, the companies said. for both cable TV set-top PC and cable modem, the set-top PC can be leased for 10,000 won or approximately US$8.80 per month and includes a free cable modem. Korea Thrunet (KOREA: news, msgs) counted 112,995 end users of its high-speed Internet services as of November 30. The company announced separately this week that Jae Hyun Lee, a former vice president of the Boston Consulting Group, has joined Thrunet as senior vice president of strategic planning. Lee's responsibilities will include new business development, strategic alliances, and mergers and acquisitions. Thrunet Buys Domain Korea.Com for $5 Us mln Friday, January 21 9:37 AM SGT SEOUL, Jan 21 Asia Pulse - Thrunet, which provides high-speed internet services through a cable TV network, bought the Web domain "korea.com" for US$5 million, the second-highest price in the world after "business.com" was purchased for $US7.5 million last November. Thrunet Chairman Lee Yong-tae said Friday that the company had signed a contract with Tiac C and C, which provides news on Korea, entertainment and e-business in the Web site. Former domain owner Lee Hee-joon, a Korean-American, bought "korea.com" for $US70 in 1995. "I think the domain name is worth $US500 million because it represents the country," Thrunet CEO Lee said. Thrunet, the first Korean company to get listed on the NASDAQ last November, registered on the market with the name "Korea" instead of its company name "Thrunet". (Yonhap)
