Flipowski's definition of Zaibatsu (from the Red Herrring magazine article):

"It's a Japanese term used prior to World War II, prior to Japan opening its borders to international trade. At the time, successful businesses were all in cahoots with each other. They were formed around family structures in which folks got together and worked together. Zaibatsus rose to prominence and owned the various industrial bases that Japan built itself on. When the United States occupied Japan, it outlawed zaibatsus, weakening them to form the keiretsus we know today without the necessary central decision making."
