If JDSU purchased Cien it would be to become a competitor to it's clients.

You are right. The component manufacturers don't want to be competing with the best customers. CEO Kevin Kalkhoven repeats (so often) that JDSU will not become a system providers (i think that is what he called the LU and NTs).

Ciena is probably a better fit with Tellabs. <g>
No offense to those that lost money when that deal fell apart.
I bet Tellabs now regrets not going through with it.

You would probably see consolodation among the buyers of the components. I have not thought about the possibilities but would be interested in knowing other peoples' opinions on which ones would be good fits. I am especially interested in getting an idea which would be good merger partner with Ciena.

Paul, I didn't mean to imply that JDSU buy out CIEN, only that in this rabid optic frenzy CIEN might be a speculative play. SDLI mentioned yesterday that they had looked at ETEK but were concerned with valuation. CIEN's stock is only now recovering from it's from the failed TLAB deal. Certainly CIEN makes a compelling buy for someone.
