The idea is not the elimination of all social classes, but the relatively greater mobility afforded people through professional achievement, and the electoral and cultural dominance of a "broad middle". For example, I live in a neighborhood that includes journeyman plumbers, small businessmen, retail clerks, restaurant managers, and so forth. Because of diverse house sizes, a number of different people can afford to live here. The income range is not too great, and we all send our children to public school. We are the "broad middle", and there is rough social equality. This is the phenomenon that struck de Toqueville so forcibly......
