I suppose that, having spent my career writing applications so that they were transportable, I underemphasize the degree to which much of the rest of the profession has painted themselves into a corner, Oracle's corner. So, I'll give you that.

I don't, however, think this necessarily applies to new apps. At one time you might have said that those would have to be on the same DB platform as the rest of the company's applications, but these days the move seems to be toward EAI because multiple, previously non-integrated applications, including those on the mainframe, have to be integrated, often in relationship with an internet play such as providing customer access through the web. In that kind of context, we could see rapid movement somewhere else, were someone to come along with a compelling value proposition for the new development.

I'm not holding my breath though.
