Holy Grail - PB, Peter, I talked to one of Becker's partners, turns out the transmembrane segments are highly enough conserved and structurally predictable that you can constrain the possible configurations of the rest of the molecule to computationally manageable proportions. They claim 3-Angstrom resolution, say they've compared their calculated structure for bacterial rhodopsin (I think it was) with the x-ray data and get an excellent fit. Supposedly they get good enough maps of binding sites to go a-hunting for ligands that fit - and all on a Silicon Graphics.

At times like this I wish we had our own VC firm set up...
