"...While the Wall Street Journal dickers around with its Web site -- What should be free? Does Dow Jones News count? How do we keep from cannibalizing our newspaper subscriptions? -- CBSMarketWatch.com (MKTW) has been forging ahead, becoming the Web site of record for business and financial news.

Its parent company, MarketWatch.com (which also operates www.bigcharts.com) now claims to have the 43rd largest Web audience, with 4.3 million unique visitors to its sites last December, an Internet reach of 6.6 percent, according to Media Metrix. CBSMarketWatch.com now has a full-time editorial staff of 82 plus about 20 outside contributors.

MarketWatch.com, of course, recently announced a joint venture with the Financial Times of London, called FTMarketWatch.com[1.]. Top columnist Thom Calandra was in London last week scoping out writers for the service. It will go live in the second quarter of this year with some 35 to 40 journalists on staff and Calandra in charge as editor in chief.

The plan is to create an elaborate set of links between MarketWatch's three sites, leveraging FT's market analysis off the pure news reporting from CBSMarketWatch in the U.S. and FTMarketWatch covering Europe. From there the company will expand into France, Spain, Italy and Germany with local language sites, says CEO Larry Kramer
