Wolff, <Isn't the risk of shrinking margins and greater supply of Athlon chips as well as new exposure to lossing the laptop market of any concern?>

Yes it is. But when has it ever been "smooth sailing" for Intel's microprocessor business? Two years ago, it was the sub-$1000 market, and look how Intel came back from that miss. Athlon? Are you discounting the possibility of a MUCH greater supply of Coppermine chips, Gateway's supply problems notwithstanding? Crusoe? While Transmeta might succeed in a niche, do you think that's a serious contender to Intel's market share?

You say you were "wrong on the timing." I think you're just plain wrong on your base assumptions about Intel. But then again, my opinion doesn't really count, since I'm just a corporate grunt, right?

Wolffman,

Isn't the risk of shrinking margins and greater supply of Athlon chips as well as new exposure to lossing the laptop market of
any concern?

Andy Bryant said in the CC that Intel GMs not only had jumped to 61% in the 4Q, but looked to stay there going forward +/- a few points. And, he is very conservative in his predictions. Name one other hardware company that can claim 61%. Even Sun Micro would kill for that.
