Sony Licenses Net-based Technology for Recording TV Programs

January 20, 2000 (TOKYO) -- Sony Corp. on Jan. 17 began licensing Internet electronic
program guide (iEPG) technology to PC makers, expansion board manufacturers and
companies offering programming information via the Internet.

Sony's iEPG provides data over the Internet which can be used to easily schedule the
recording of TV programs. It is a stripped down version of Sony's Giga Pocket software.
Giga Pocket enables users to record, play and manage video files on PCs. The iEPG retains
only the Giga Pocket function letting users set their PCs to record TV programs.

The iEPG feature has been available with Giga Pocket, one of the preinstalled programs in
Sony's VAIO R series computers, since the latter program was released in June 1999. The
VAIO R computers feature a TV tuner and a Moving Picture Experts Group-2 (MPEG-2)
encoder. This gives owners the opportunity to record/timer-record TV programs on hard
disks using MPEG-1 or MEPG-2 image compression.

The Internet TV Guide Japan homepage, run by Tokyo News Service Ltd., currently offers
an iEPG-compatible TV program guide. According to Tetsuo Sugano, a manager in Sony's
corporate communications division, the company plans to seek support for the
technology from TV stations and related firms.
