Dear marvin: Apparently many people feel as you do. See article below. I have no doubt personally they CAN beat the street the only question in my mind is how much will they hold back for a rainy day? I also am hopeful they announce record bookings and backlog. JDN

Sun Microsystems Options Active as Investors Open Positions

New York, Jan. 20 (Bloomberg) -- Trading in options to buy Sun Microsystems Inc. indicate some investors expect the company's fiscal second-quarter earnings to beat estimates, an analyst said.

The number of outstanding call options granting the right, without the obligation, to buy stock for 85 next month has increased 75 percent in the last five days as investors opened new positions on expectations the stock has room to rise.

The increase ''in open interest is encouraging and seen as bullish,'' said Joe Sunderman, a research analyst at Schaeffer's Investment Research Inc., a Cincinnati options advisory firm.

Open interest on those calls rose to 4600 contracts by late morning, up from 2600 contracts five days ago, according to Sunderman. They gained 1 1/2 to 7 1/2 in recent trading.

Shares in the company gained 3 1/16 to 86 1/8.

Sun Micro, whose computers run many of the busiest Internet sites, has beaten or matched earnings estimates in at least the last five quarters, according to First Call/Thomson Financial.

The company is expected to report earnings of 20 cents a share for the quarter ended Dec. 31, according to the average estimate of analysts surveyed by First Call. The report is scheduled for release after exchanges close today.
