Dear Jc and all; I just finished listening to the CC. Wasnt over but questions were getting mundane.
I think that its obvious they held back some from this qtr. Backlog up over 1/2 a billion to 1.52 billion. Plus Inventories up. Easiest way to shift sales is to leave a widget out of the product so when inventory details come out check and see if W.I.P. and Fin. Goods inventory is up, that will be the proof, along with the backlog increase.
No doubt this is going to be a good year, word Scott used was something like the STARS ARE ALL ALIGNED in our favor. As to growth, they are willing now to admit it will be similar to this qtr (26 1/2%) top line, but Scott was quick to admit, if they have the capacity they will GO FOR IT. Problem seems to be a people problem. They ship SYSTEMS not units and lot of people outside of manufacturing dept. necessary to complete the installation. So thats the bottleneck as I see it.
Regarding the product, they were very strong about its value over its competition and SPARC 8 release coming out in a week or two which they believe is at least 2 years ahead of anyone else. They gave such a compelling story as to why Solaris is so much better then the touted W2W product coming out from MSFT that I was relieved that I dont own any MSFT stock.
So, all in all, I thought it was a good strong CC. My only reservation is that it would appear unreasonable to assume any growth beyond say 30%-not because the demand isnt there but because they may just not be able to handle it all.
Any SUNW employees on the thread may wish to discuss this. JDN
