Re QCOM Patents - Of interest was this statement:

"In particular, QUALCOMM has identified to international standards setting organizations more than 100 separate patents and published applications (not counting foreign counterparts) relevant to the W-CDMA standard proposed to those bodies for 3G wireless systems."

and

"Claims of this patent that were confirmed are essential to both Second (2G) and Third Generation (3G) CDMA wireless telecommunications standards, covering critical specifications of such standards."

The IDC contingent has been quite vocal saying QCOM is exposed re W-CDMA. It appears QCOM is using this patent ruling as an opportunity to state where its position is re 3G IPR.

Looks like I'm a little late to the party, but here it is, sent a few minutes ago.

Dear SI Admin Bob,

I'd like to weigh in on the matter of suspending Maurice Winn from the Qualcomm - Coming into Buying Range thread. I have been a member of SI since November 1997 and a long, long-time lurker before that, so I have been reading his posts on the Qualcomm and Globalstar threads for nearly four years.

Maurice Winn is one of the most persuasive, vigorous, and intellectually challenging, posters I have encountered on SI, or anywhere for that matter, and as for his trenchant sense of humor, I have yet to meet anyone who is his match. In my mind he has made a substantial contribution over the years to the ongoing dialogue about investing in Qualcomm It is his kind of voice that prompted me to join SI, it is his kind of posting that keeps me reading these boards on an almost daily basis, and it is his kind of contribution that makes a strong and vibrant community.

I spent a bit of time earlier today browsing through several hundred posts on the Qualcomm - Coming Into Buying Range thread. Whhheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! Yes, a bit of personal attack flying back and forth. I'm not sure which of Maurice's posts were considered personal attacks, but then again, I'm not the referee. I encourage you to reconsider Maurice's suspension.

As for the nature of the fracas on the "Coming into Buying Range" thread, I can only observe that with investing, as with so many other matters, emotions often cloud our judgment. I'm sure you see that in your duties of referee.

Sincerely, Nancy Haft

Re: Korean patent ruling.

Wasn't there a news release Wednesday (sorry, do not remember the post) which highlited the negative ruling on the three of then nine patents. Given the actual ruling, I have to assume the contents of that new release must have been put out by the MOT faction.

Maybe it was to cover their less than stellar quarterly results in the wireless area. They did the same kind of thing last quarter. That time it was with a "new" chip (one like that which QCOM had developed some time ago if I remember correctly).

Well maybe this ruling, on top of the US ruling last March that prompted the ERICY capitulation, will produce the same result with MOT re: QCOM ASCIS. Then again, maybe they will just keep on living in denial.
