Telewest, Worldwide Fiber to Lay British Fiber Line
VANCOUVER (Reuters) - Telewest Communications Plc (TWT.L), Britain's No. 2 cable operator, will team up with Worldwide Fiber Inc., a private Canadian fiber-optics network builder, to lay down a fiber network linking London and Liverpool, the companies said on Thursday.

Telewest will build the 1,150-kilometer (700-mile) network connecting Worldwide Fiber's station near Liverpool with its London point.

Worldwide Fiber, based in Vancouver, has popped up on many people's radar screens since late December, when Greg Maffei quit his job as ex-chief financial officer at Microsoft Corp. (NasdaqNM:MSFT - news) to become chief executive of Worldwide Fiber.

The network is part of an expansion of Telewest fiber networks linking major cities in Britain. The network's initial phase is priced at about $66 million.

Worldwide Fiber, which has been busy expanding its network through the United States, plans a transatlantic, under-sea fiber-optic line from Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Boston to Liverpool and Dublin.
