Trie Links Funds for Clinton to China's Military
UPI
February 7, 2000

Controversial Democratic fund-raiser Yin Lah "Charlie" Trie told the FBI last spring that he received money from an Indonesian billionaire to "help out" with political contributions, some of which wound up with the Democratic National Committee in 1996, and also formed business relationships with other Asian contacts, including a Chinese army officer.
The Los Angeles Times reported Sunday that an FBI report on its wide-ranging interviews with Trie indicated the Chinese officer, a woman who was later arrested in China on corruption charges, had even been recommended by Trie for membership in the DNC's business leadership forum, although she never joined. The FBI's 74-page report details an extensive debriefing of Trie following his guilty pleas last May to election law violations. The newspaper said the report comes at a time when campaign finance has become a hot-button issue in the 2000 presidential campaign.

Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona has long been a vocal advocate of campaign finance reform, while Gore has had to keep himself on the outskirts of accusations from others, including former Sen. Bill Bradley, that the 1996 Clinton-Gore re-election campaign was the beneficiary of questionable contributions that allegedly originated overseas and were funneled into the campaign war chest by Trie and fellow fund-raiser John Huang. Foreign contributions are a violation of United States election laws.(cont)
