Robert, its only boring if you think stocks go up because of the tooth fairy. What is really boring is the idea that there is a limitless pile of cash 'sitting on the sidelines' waiting to buy stocks. The trade deficit matters in a way which truly is 'profound'. It is the trap door under the 'pile of cash'. Bon chance.

True, but the upside surprise came in large part from stuff like luxury automobiles, providing more ammo for those who worry about "wealth effect" spending. Additionally, the growth in the trade deficit from 98 to 99 was pretty massive--over 50%, I think.
