Does anyone have a figure for how much money is in S&P500 funds? I'm sure it's a big number, but to be accurate this number must include funds which are not listed in the business pages - for instance, the entire Federal Government uses 3 non-public funds for retirement contributions, one of which tracks the S&P500.

I'd be curious to know how many millions of shares would have to be purchased when S&P finally makes the decision. At today's $70 billion cap, I figure funds will have to allocate about 0.75% of their capital for JDSU stock purchases. For instance, if the index funds held $100 billion total, they would have to collectively buy 750 million worth of JDSU or only 3 million shares, about 1/2 of the average daily volume. I have a feeling the figure is much larger.
