Posted January 21, 2000

New Delhi, January 21: Desktop personal computer sales improved by an impressive 45 per cent at 6.63 lakh units in the first half of 1999-2000 as against 4.5 lakh units for the same period last fiscal, suggesting an upswing in the IT hardware sector, according to the Manufacturers Association for Information Technology (MAIT). The association has predicted that PC sales will grow by 41 per cent at 1.45 million units for the year 1999-2000 over the previous fiscal.

Releasing the Fifth IT Industry Performance: Mid-Year Review, MAIT President Hemant Bharat Ram told reporters here that assembled PCs, including smaller lesser known regional brands and unbranded, accounted for 57 per cent of the total sales up from 48 per cent last year. The market share of Indian brands and the MNC brands declined from 23 per cent and 29 per cent to 21 per cent and 22 per cent respectively.

'The branded computers are at a cost disadvantage as they have to pay customs, sales and excise duties in the highly price-sensitive Indian market'.

The study, conducted jointly by MAIT and Indian Market Research Bureau (IMRB), took into account feedback from over 11,000 end users from 16 cities in India.

The MAIT IMRB study further revealed that PC shipments to the business segment grew by 42 per cent while in households it grew by 58 per cent as compared to the shipments of the same period last year. On the pc shipments within businesses, the smaller sized establishments, it grew by 57 per cent accounting for one-fourth of all pc sales.

In terms of the configuration, PC shipments of higher end of technology account for 64 per cent of sales, 'thus reflecting the ease of availability of latest technology and the awareness of the Indian market,' Vinnie Mehta, Director, MAIT, said.
