Old (10/99) 3Com announcement re wireless strategy: 3Com Outlines Wireless Connectivity Strategy At Telecom 99 Geneva Converged Wireless Solutions to Deliver Voice, Video and Data Anytime, Anywhere HONG KONG, October 12, 1999 ? 3Com Corporation (Nasdaq: COMS), a leading networking and wireless company, has announced an aggressive strategy to wirelessly connect people on the move, at work and at home. 3Com chairman and CEO Eric Benhamou and 3Com senior vice president Irfan Ali unveiled 3Com's comprehensive wireless strategy at the 8th World Telecommunication Exhibition, a prestigious gathering of government leaders, top executives, technology investors and press hosted by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). 3Com's strategy is to develop wireless networking technologies that give people and businesses total network availability and secure access to voice, video, data and e-business applications, regardless of their physical location. 3Com is building on its leadership in all key areas - carrier services, handheld connectivity, business and residential solutions - to deliver a complete set of high-speed, standards-based wireless systems. "Wireless access is a growth enabler for e-business across all markets," said Eric Benhamou. "3Com is the first company to take a 'holistic' approach to wireless networking, pulling together these disparate technologies into a single wireless experience for businesses and individuals. Wireless connectivity is an essential step in realizing 3Com's vision of pervasive networking." Wireless on the Move Today, 3Com announced plans for enabling CDMA wireless service providers to migrate to 3G (3rd generation) networks. 3G networks will provide robust data access at speeds up to 2Mbps. The migration plans include the development of a suite of industry-standard, open-interface network products for a 3G CDMA wireless data network infrastructure. The 3G strategy will be rolled out in two phases and paves the way for wireless voice services over IP networks. "With its proven leadership in providing current wireless data solutions for some of the largest carriers in the world, 3Com is uniquely positioned for the migration towards 3G," said Irfan Ali, senior vice president and general manager of 3Com's Carrier Systems Division. "3Com products will provide optimum performance, but are also designed to work independently in an open 3G architecture. 3Com plans to deliver the first implementations of these products to wireless service providers in 2000 to enable our carrier customers to introduce new 3G wireless services in a timely manner." Wireless At Work 3Com will deliver high-speed wireless local area network (LAN) connections to workers who access e-mail, corporate information or the Internet, anywhere in the office. 3Com today re-affirmed that the 3ComAirConnect wireless LAN for enterprise customers is scheduled to ship this fall to select countries in Asia Pacific, Europe and North America. 3Com also plans to introduce a high-speed wireless LAN solution for small businesses next year. 3Com endorses the IEEE 802.11b High Rate standard for the AirConnect solution and all of its wireless LANs. This robust 11 Mbps solution is the first to crack the Ethernet speed barrier, enabling seamless access to a full range of Ethernet services as employees roam across an enterprise campus. 3Com is also a founding member of the Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance (WECA), a group of 17 networking and computer manufacturers that have united to ensure interoperability and wide adoption of IEEE 802.11b HR as the agreed-upon standard for high-speed wireless local area networking. Wireless at Home At Telecom 99, 3Com also announced that it plans to deliver a low-cost home wireless LAN solution worldwide next year. 3Com sees wireless home networking growing in popularity as broadband access reaches more homes and wireless LAN products become increasingly simple to install and use. 3Com's strategy to deploy converged wireless solutions will keep 3Com customers connected on the move, at work and at home.
